Merrick Leads Cal State Open

Sept. 2, 2004

Former UCLA All-American John Merrick leads a contingent of five players with UCLA ties in the 166-player field at the 83rd California State Open at the Murietta Country Club in Murietta. Merrick fired an opening round score of six-under par 66 and is tied for first place. UCLA Head Coach O.D. Vincent was tied for 12th at three-under 69, followed by former Bruin Parker Mclachlin who carded a round of 70 (-2) and was tied for 16th. McLachlin won on the Tight Lies Tour earlier this month at the Rose Creek Golf Club in Edmond, OK. Former All-American Travis Johnson posted a 77 (+5) and returning senior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas, the first female entered in the event in more than 30 years, carded a 78 (+6). Merrick and Vincent each boasted bogey-free rounds with Merrick carding three birdies on each nine. Merrick, who turned professional in June, has been playing on the Nationwide and Gateway Tours.
