The top-ranked and unbeaten UCLA men's volleyball team this week hosts a pair of MPSF matches as part of a month-long, 10-match homestand.
On Feb. 13, the Bruins host San Diego State (1-3, 1-3) at Pauley Pavilion and on Valentine's evening, the Bruins entertain UC San Diego (0-5, 1-6) in the John Wooden Center. First-serve for both matches is 7 p.m.
Last week, the Bruins, 8-0 overall and 5-0 in MPSF action, won a pair of MPSF matches, defeating USC, 3-1 in the 21st annual Kilgour Cup, and sweeping third ranked Long Beach State, 3-0 at the Pyramid.
The victory over USC on Feb. 4 was UCLA's 12th straight over their cross-town rival and retained their Kilgour Cup title for the sixth consecutive year. In the USC match, five Bruins spiked 10 or more kills, led by freshman outside hitter Mark Williams' 19. Senior quick hitter Tom Stillwell smashed 17 kills, hit .640 and blocked seven balls.
Against Long Beach State Feb. 7, the Bruins held the 49ers to .194 hitting, while hitting .292. Junior opposite Evan Thatcher led the Bruins with 16 kills in 31 attempts. Senior outside hitter Ben Moselle recorded his first double-double of the season, spiking 13 kills and digging 12 balls.
Combined with BYU's two losses at Pepperdine last week, the Bruins figure to add Volleyball magazine's No.1 ranking to their AVCA top billing.
"I think we deserve to be No.1 at this point," said UCLA head coach Al Scates. "We've beaten some tough teams on the road this season -- Hawaii, Pepperdine and Long Beach State."
The Bruins have not lost to San Diego State since 1991 and own a six-match winning streak. UCLA has never lost to UC San Diego, compiling a 27-0 all-time series record against the Tritons.UCLA VB QUICK FACTS
