UCLA's Kevin Chappell, James Lee and incoming freshman Jason Kang each completed their first rounds at the 106th U.S. Amateur in Chaska, MN. The 312-player field will alternate between the Chaska Town Course and the Hazeltine Golf Club for the first two rounds of stroke play.
Chappell posted a two-over par round of 73 at the shorter Chaska Course on Monday and was tied for 46th place. Kang carded a 74 (+2) at Hazeltine, which measured 7,473 yards and produced averages of nearly 79 in the first round. He was tied for 67th. Lee posted a score of 82 (+10) at Hazeltine and was tied for 271st.
Playing the Chaska course, University of Florida sophomore Billy Horschel fired a nine-under par 60, a U.S. Amateur record, to take the first round lead.
Match play commences on Wednesday with the top 64 players competing.
