HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine swept three games from UCLA in a first-round match at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The No. 14 Wahine, led by Heather Bowns 18 kills, overpowered the No. 18 Bruins 15-10, 15-9, 15-3, before a crowd of 7,618.
The match started evenly, but with the score tied at 7 the Wahine ran off four points for an 11-7 lead. UCLA stopped the run with a time-out, but it wasn't enough to corral UH on its way to the 15-10 final.
In the second game, the Wahine jumped to an early 8-3 lead before UCLA called another momentum stopping time-out, but again, it wasnt enough to prevent UH from controlling the game.
By the third game, UH was on a roll as it forged to a 10-0 lead before coasting to the 15-3 match-sealing victory.
Joining Bown, who had an incredible .857 kill percentage, was Veronica Lima with 15 kills and seven blocks and setter Nikki Hubbert with 40 assists for the Wahine.
UCLA was led by Ashley Bowles and Kristee Porter, who had nine kills apiece.
