Conway, Merrick Chasing the Leaders at Northeast Amateur

June 19, 2003

UCLA golfers Steve Conway and John Merrick are chasing the leaders after the first round of the Northeast Amateur Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island.

The par 69 course yielded low scores in Thursday's first round. Conway fired an even par 69 and is tied for 13th place, and Merrick posted a two-over par 71 and is tied for 32nd place. Both players are within striking distance of the leaders, however.

Jason Hartwick leads the field with a four-under par 65. Other Pac-10 players in the hunt are Cal's Peter Tomasula and ASU's Chez Reavie, who are tied for fourth place at two-under 67.

Second round action continues Friday.
