LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's soccer forward Iris Mora will be headed to the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece after helping the Mexican Women's National Team pull a 2-1 upset victory over Canada in CONCACAF Qualifying Wednesday in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Maribel Dominguez tallied both goals for Mexico with strikes in each half (25, 60 min.). With Mexico up 2-0 late in the contest, Canada got on the board in the 83rd minute on a goal by Aysha Jamani. However Mexico's tough defense down the stretch preserved the victory.
"It means so much to us and to Mexican women," added Mora after the game. "We've been working for seven years and have never won anything. It's just a fantastic feeling. It's almost unbelievable."
Added head coach Jillian Ellis, "We're obviously thrilled for Iris and her teammates. I know she will represent her country well in Athens and we wish her all the best."
Mexico, which will play the U.S. in tomorrow's final despite already qualifying, had lost to Canada in all 10 of their previous meetings.
