CINCINNATI - UCLA women's volleyball opened its 2006 campaign with a pair of victories at the State Farm Bearcats Invitational presented by The Vernon Manor Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bruins started the morning with a 3-0 win over Tennessee Tech before sweeping Western Michigan in the nightcap.

No. 10 UCLA shook off a sluggish start, rolling to a three-game sweep of Tennessee Tech in the opening match of Saturday's schedule at the State Farm Bearcats Invitational presented by the Vernon Manor Hotel. The Bruins took the win by scores of 30-18, 30-18, 30-20.
UCLA (1-0) hit .318 for the match, including a best of .364 in game two. Rachell Johnson turned in a monster game with 14 kills, while hitting an eye-popping .722. Kaitlin Sather and Katie Carter added 12 kills apiece for the winners.
Tennessee Tech (1-1) was led by six kills each from Caitlin Bullock and Laura Tyburski. The tournament continues at 2 p.m. today with Tennessee Tech taking on Western Michigan.

No. 10 UCLA set up a battle for the State Farm Bearcats Invitational title with host Cincinnati by topping Western Michigan in three game on Saturday night in Fifth Third Arena. The Bruins won by scores of 30-27, 30-22, 30-23.
UCLA got 12 kills from All-American Nana Meriwether and 10 from Kaitlin Sather in picking up its second victory of the season. Nellie Spicer did it all from her setter post, registering four kills, handing out 39 assists and adding 12 digs and two blocks. Jordan Smith chipped in 12 digs for the Bruins.
Katie Eberling paced Western Michigan (2-2) with nine digs, while Caitlin Strimel led all players with 17 digs.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the Bruins-Bearcats matchup set for 1 p.m.
