After scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, UCLA (19-16, 3-5) allowed four runs in the final three frames as Arizona State (26-11, 5-6) took a 4-3 win.
Starter Casey Janssen was solid once again in his tenth start of the season. He allowed only six hits in 6.2 innings of work. He allowed three runs and struck out four Sun Devils.
UCLA jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Wes Whisler led off the frame with a triple. Ryan McCarthy would bring him home on a sacrifice fly to give UCLA a 1-0 lead. Brett McMillan would then hit his fourth home run of the season to put the Bruins ahead by two. A two-out double from Brandon Averill would keep the rally going and he would come around to score on a single from Chris Denove. At the end of four, UCLA led 3-0.
The Sun Devils would return to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Asanovich would drive in one run with a sacrific fly before Nick Walsh evened the score with a two-RBI double to right field.
Tied a 3-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning, Arizona State loaded the bases with no outs. After a shallow fly out by Travis Buck, Zechry Zinicola would bring in the winning run with another sacrifice fly.
Zinicola also got the win for ASU as he shutout the Bruins in the final 1.1 innings.
The teams will face-off in the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
