Sophomore Peter Belden and freshman Michael March both scored in the first overtime period as sixth-ranked UCLA defeated second-ranked USC, 9-7 in the fifth-place match at the 2002 So Cal Tournament held at McDonald's Swim Stadium at USC. The Bruins improved to 3-2 after the tournament and earned UCLA's first points in the year long Lexus Gauntlet Cup. March led UCLA with three goals while goalkeeper Brandon Brooks recorded 13 saves, including three in both overtime periods.
The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period before the Trojans rallied to tie the match, 7-7 with 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. Along with the scored from March and Belden, Brett Ormsby and Matt Flesher scored two goals apiece, while Albert Garcia added another goal.
Before reaching the fifth-place game, the Bruins defeated Long Beach State, 4-2 in the first game of the day. After being tied at 1-1 after the first period, UCLA scored two unanswered goals in the second quarter to gain the lead for good. Ormsby, Dan Yeilding, Josh Hewko and Ted Peck all scored for the Bruins, while Brooks posted seven saves.
UCLA will return to the pool with its annual alumni match at noon next Sunday, September 22nd at Sunset Recreation Center. They will get back to intercollegiate play with its MPSF opener against USC at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday, September 28th. The time is yet to be determined.
