Ballona Creek - Marina del Rey, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team opened up the 2004 season today with the First Annual UCLA Class Race. The Bruin Juniors, who make up the majority of the varsity eight, demonstrated their experience over the Sophomore/Senior boat and the Freshmen boats to win the intra-squad exhibition.
In Heat 1 of the preliminary races, the Freshman #1 team finished the 1500m course in 5:53.0, 7-seconds ahead of the Soph./Sen. boat (6:00.0). With the victory, the Freshman #1 team advanced to the grand final race.
In Heat 2, the Juniors posted a winning time of 5:36.0, 16-seconds ahead of the Freshman #2 boat (5:52.0) to advance to the grand final.
The Soph./Sen. team faced the Freshman #2 boat in the petite final, finishing in 5:48.1 to place third overall. The Freshman #2 boat finished 8.1-seconds back at 5:56.2.
The Juniors were victorious over the Freshman #1 team in the grand final race to win the intra-squad exhibition. The Juniors recorded a winning time of 5:40.7, and the Freshman #1 team earned second-place honors finishing in 5:50.0.
The event was also Parent/Alumni Day, and the venue attracted over 230 fans to watch the competition.
At the conclusion of the grand final, two new racing eights were christened, the "Ms. Lin" and the "Big Tom". The "Ms. Lin" honors Lin Werner for her support and dedication to the UCLA women's rowing team. The "Big Tom" is dedicated to Tom Bengard, father of sophomore rower, Christianne Bengard, for his donation of shell to the program.
The Bruins return to action next Saturday, Mar. 20, as they dual UC Irvine at Ballona Creek. The first race is scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
