UCLA men and women track and field athletes will compete this weekend (March 5-6) at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
Leading the Bruin contingent will be junior Seilala Sua, who last weekend at the USA Indoor meet in Atlanta placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 56-3 1/4. Sua, from Cooper City, FL, has a season-best indoor effort of 57-4 1/4, the No. 1 U. S. collegiate mark on the current list. She will also compete in the weight throw as her 63-5 1/2 is the No. 8 collegiate mark. In 1998 outdoor competition, Sua won the USA discus title and defended her NCAA discus crown.
Also competing for the Bruin women will be--in the pole vault, freshman Tracy O'Hara, who last week at the USA Indoor meet placed sixth (13-3 1/2) and is the American prep record-holder (13-3), along with sophomore Erica Hoernig, who was 10th (11-11 3/4) at the USA Indoor and also in the shot put, freshman Chaniqua Ross, who was 11th (47-5) at the USA Indoor.
Leading the Bruin men will be senior Mark Hauser, from St. Augustine HS in San Diego. Hauser will run in the 3,000m (7:59.19) and on UCLA's distance medley relay (9:38.81). During the current indoor season, Hauser has set three school indoor records (mile, 4:01.45; 3000m, 7:57.89; and running the mile leg on UCLA's distance medley relay, 9:36.67, No. 2 U. S. collegiate all-time).
Also competing for the UCLA men will be--junior Jess Strutzel, who this winter set the school indoor record in the 800m (1:48.07) and who will run the 1200m leg on the distance medley relay; sophomore Steven Michaels in the pole vault (17-5 1/2, No. 11 on the current U. S. collegiate indoor list); senior Wade Tift, who placed 10th (58-8) at the USA Indoor, in the shot put and the Bruins' distance medley relay (1200m, Strutzel; 400m, senior Brian Fell; 800m, junior Michael Granville; mile, Hauser; alternates are junior Malachi Davis and sophomore Terrance Williams).
