Los Angeles - Junior RHP Hector Ambriz tossed 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts, and UCLA scored six runs in the first three innings to earn an 8-1 win over Stanford on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium, ending the Cardinal's seven-game win streak. The win improves UCLA to 29-21 overall and 11-8 in the Pac-10 while Stanford drops to 28-22 overall and 10-12 in the Pac-10.
Senior Sean Smith went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, and two RBI, and freshman Ryan Babineau went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Jermaine Curtis went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple, freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored, and Ambriz had a double and two RBI.
Ambriz (7-6) scattered seven hits, with no walks, allowing just one run in the ball game on a wild pitch.
UCLA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Crawford led things off with a triple to right field, and Curtis followed with a triple to right to score him and give UCLA a 1-0 lead. With one out, Ambriz doubled to right center to score Curtis. Smith scored Ambriz from third with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Bruins a three-run advantage.
UCLA went up 4-0 in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Ambriz with the bases loaded and one out.
The Bruins took a 6-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run home run to left by Babineau with two outs.
Babineau gave UCLA a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning with a RBI-single that took a bad hop over Stanford shortstop Chris Minaker with two outs.
Ambriz threw five scoreless innings until tossing a wild pitch in the sixth inning that scored Ryan Seawell from third to cut the Bruin lead to 7-1.
Smith led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to left field to give UCLA an 8-1 lead that would last.
UCLA has now scored eight runs or more in a game four-consecutive times, as the Bruins have collected 10-or-more hits in the last five-straight games.
The Bruins and the Cardinal will face off in game two of the three-game series on Saturday, May 20 at Jackie Robinson Stadium Game time is set for 2 p.m.
