November 3, 1998

Bob Larsen's UCLA men's cross country team and Eric Peterson's Bruin women's squad, rated No. 23 in the U. S. last week, will train through this weekend, preparing for the upcoming NCAA Western Regional Qualifying meet, on Nov. 14 in Fresno.

In Fresno, the top two teams in both the men's and women's divisions will automatically advance to the NCAA Championship meet on Nov. 23 in Lawrence, KS. In addition, from around the U. S., there will be 13 at-large men's and women's teams along with four individuals from each region and another two at-large individuals.

Last Saturday (Oct. 31) in Eugene, OR, both the Bruin men's and women's teams placed eighth in the 1998 Pacific-10 Cross Country Championships. Stanford won both the men's and women's titles and Arizona swept the men's and women's individual trophies.

In the men's division, Stanford, the defending NCAA Champion, held off host Oregon and won with 48 points to Oregon's 50. Those teams were followed by Arizona (90), Arizona State (124), Washington State and Washington (tied with 136), California (171) and UCLA (179). Going into the meet, Stanford was ranked No. 1 in the nation, followed by No. 3 Oregon and No. 5 Arizona.

The men's 8,000m race was won by Arizona's Abdi Abdirahman, who won with a time of 23:23. The Bruins were paced by senior Mark Hauser, from St. Augustine HS in San Diego, who placed fifth (23:51). If Hauser continues to run well at the Western Regionals on Nov. 14, he has a chance to qualify for the NCAA meet. UCLA's other top finisher was sophomore Paul Muite, who placed 31st (24:57).

In the women's division, Stanford, the defending Pac-10 champion who was second at last year's NCAA, won with 53 points, ahead of second-place Washington (74). Behind those two teams were Arizona (92), Arizona State (122), Oregon (125), Washington State (154), USC (166), UCLA (167) and California (179). Entering the meet, Stanford was rated No. 2 in the U. S., followed by No. 6 Arizona, No. 12 Washington, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 16 Oregon and No. 23 UCLA.

The women's 5,000m race was won by defending champion, Arizona's Amy Skieresz, who won with a time of 16:59. The Bruins' top two runners were junior Christina Bowen, from San Ramon HS in Danville, who was 25th (18:24) and sophomore Julie Ott, from Uni. of San Diego HS, who was 27th (18:28).
