Honolulu, HI - The UCLA women's basketball team made a furious rally, nearly coming back from a double-digit deficit late in the game, but came up just short against the University of Hawai`i, 70-66.
UH built their biggest lead of the game, 65-55, with just 1:34 left in the game, but the Bruins game roaring back, scoring eight straight points in less than 40 seconds. The Rainbow Wahine broke the Bruin press to get ahead by four, but a 3-pointer by Willis made the score 67-66 with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Jade Abele hit a pair of free throws on UH's next possession, and when Greco's 3-pointer from the top of the key fell off the rim with 10 seconds left, the Rainbow Wahine escaped with an opening-day win.
The game was close throughout with the Bruins owning a 31-30 lead at the half. No team lead by more than four points until UH built a 10-point lead in the final three minutes. The Rainbow Wahine trailed by three with eight minutes remaining, but consecutive three-point plays Abele and April Atuaia gave UH a lead they would not relinquish.
UH shot 62 percent in the second half and outscored the Bruins 25-9 at the free throw line. UH also out-rebounded UCLA 40-34.
UCLA next faces Sacramento State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Hawaii time to conclude its play in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic.
