Jan. 24, 2000
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA's defending NCAA Champion softball team takes to the field at Easton Stadium for the first time in 2000 this Saturday with the Alumni Game scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Head coach Sue Enquist's Bruins return all but two starters from last year's squad, and adds a very strong recruiting class to the mix.
With last season's centerfielder, Christie Ambrosi, and catcher, Stacey Nuveman, off to spend this season with the U.S. Olympic Team, the 2000 Bruin lineup will look a bit different than last season. However, seniors Julie Adams, Lyndsey Klein and Julie Marshall are back and ready for more. Adams, the Most Outstanding Player at last season's College World Series and NCAA Regional, is back to anchor the infield at third base, while Klein will once again start at second. Marshall will split time between the bag at first, where she played the majority of last season, and behind the plate, where she will fill in defensively for Nuveman.
Both Bruin pitchers also return, with All-Americans Courtney Dale and Amanda Freed dominating the circle once again. Last season, Dale tied UCLA's single-season record for victories with a 33-1 record, while Freed, an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team, completed the year with a 0.96 ERA. The first coaches poll of the new season will be released on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Six Bruin Olympians Featured in Saturday's Alumni Game
The 2000 U.S. Olympic Softball team has been chosen, and seven Bruins are on the roster. Six of the seven can be seen this Saturday at Easton Stadium, as Lisa Fernandez, Dot Richardson, Sheila Cornell-Douty, Stacey Nuveman, Christie Ambrosi and Amanda Freed are scheduled to play in the Alumni Game. The lone Bruin U.S. Olympian that will not be in attendance on Saturday will be Jennifer Brundage (UCLA '95), who is currently an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. Freed is an alternate for the 2000 Olympic Team.
Players Clinic To Precede Alumni Game
A three-hour player and coaches clinic will be conducted on Saturday morning (9 a.m.-Noon) at the UCLA Intramural field with instruction provided by the defending NCAA Champion UCLA softball team. To register for the clinic, contact the athletic department's Sports Camps office at 310/206-3550. The cost of the clinic is $25 for coaches, $40 for players who register after Jan. 24. Team discounts are also available.
Time Change Puts First Pitch at 2:30 p.m.
The start time for the nine-inning Alumni Game has changed since some early editions of the 2000 UCLA softball schedule with first pitch now scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Easton Stadium. Current and former Bruins will be combined to form two teams for the event. This will be the first opportunity for fans to see UCLA's top-notch freshman class of Toria Auelua, Monique Mejia, Tairia Mims and Natasha Watley. The Bruins will not play at Easton Stadium again between Saturday's Alumni game and a pair of non-conference doubleheaders against Cal State Northridge and Fresno State on Feb. 24 and 26, respectively.
