All five players representing UCLA golf positioned themselves to make the 36-hole cut at the 103rd U.S. Amateur Championship, being hosted at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA.
The U.S. Amateur features 36 holes of stroke play competition, followed by match play among the top 64 players. The two-round cut follows Tuesday's round.
Senior Travis Johnson posted a two-under par first round score of 68 at the par 70 Pittsburgh Field Club and he has sole possession of third place. Steve Conway was the only player in the field to beat par at Oakmont CC, site of several U.S. Opens, when he posted a one-under par score of 69, tied for seventh place. John Merrick is tied 44th place after a two-over par 72 at Oakmont. John Poucher (Pittsburgh FC) and former Bruin standout Parker McLachlin (Oakmont CC) each posted rounds of 76, six over par.
Ryan Moore of Puyallup, WA, leads the field after a five-under par round of 65 at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
