Los Angeles, CA - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team defeated Team USA this afternoon 3-2 at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. In a defensive contest between the two water polo squads the Bruins were able to prevail behind the outstanding play of senior goalkeeper Jaime Hipp and freshman Kelly Rulon.
The Bruins got on the board fist midway through the first period with a goal by freshman Kelly Rulon. It would be the only goal of a period that feautred exceptional play in the net from Bruin goalie Jaime Hipp and Team USA and former Bruin goalkeeper Nicolle Payne. In the second period the national team would answer back with less than a minute remaining with a goal by Bruin Amber Stachowski (who is redshirting the 2003 season to train with the naitonal team) to knot the score at 1-1 at half. The third period would be no different from the first half, with both teams keeping each other in check, with a goal by senior Jessica Lopez giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead. In the fourth period, Jaime Hipp continued to shine recording four saves. Though Heather Petri of Team USA would tie the game 2-2 with just over a minute remaining, Kelly Rulon was able to find the back of the net with forty seconds remaining to give the Bruins the 3-2 lead. After stopping Team USA on its final possession the Bruins prevailed 3-2.
The Bruins conclude their regular season next weekend on Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 PM vs. UC Santa Barbara at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
