UCLA Men's Track & Field Travels To Cornhusker Invite; Northern Arizona Invite

Art Venegas's UCLA men's track and field team continues its 2002 indoor campaign this weekend, competing at the Cornhusker Invitational in Lincoln, NE (Feb. 8-9) and at the Northern Arizona Invitational in Flagstaff, AZ (Feb. 9).

Last Saturday (Feb. 2), the Bruin throwers led UCLA at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, WA. Junior Scott Wiegand, senior Scott Moser and sophomore Danny Ames all had outstanding efforts.

Wiegand won the men's shot put in a personal indoor best 63-7 (an NCAA automatic qualifying mark). Moser won the 35-lb. weight throw (66-0.25, NCAA provisional mark) and was fourth in the shot put (58-6.25, NCAA provisional). Ames was second in the weight throw (61-5) and second in the shot put (62-5.75, personal indoor best and NCAA automatic qualifying mark).

Also winning events for the Bruins were - sophomore Denye Versher won the 400m (47.96) and ran on UCLA's winning 4x400m relay (315.90), sophomore Juaune Armon, victorious in the long jump (24-2.50, personal indoor best) and placing second in the triple jump (49-7.75, personal indoor best), senior Michael Lipscomb, who won the 200m (21.93) and the 60m consolation final (6.98, 7.10Q), sophomore Nick Thornton winning the 800m (1:50.69, personal indoor best).

Other top performances included -sophomore Chuckie Ryan, who placed second in the 60m hurdles (8.22, 8.40Q), junior John McCauley, third in the 60m dash (6.97, 7.02Q) and 200m (22.09), sophomore Jon Rankin who placed fourth in the mile run (4:08.42), junior Kyle Erickson placing third (48.67) in the 400m and senior Bryan Green, second in the 3000m (8:12.73).
