LAS VEGAS - UCLA put up two run-rule victories on Saturday at the UNLV Classic, opening with a 10-2 five-inning win over BYU before coming back for an 11-2 five-inning win over No. 12 Nebraska. The Bruins are now 13-0 on the season, with pitcher Keira Goerl holding a 7-0 record and Amanda Freed standing at 6-0 for the year.
Against the Cougars, UCLA walked the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, but sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl was able to get out of the jam, striking out Brooke Cadiente and getting Lauren Watson to pop out to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Bruins scored three on a home run by Tairia Mims, her third of the season, scoring Amanda Freed and Stacey Nuveman who had both walked in the inning.
UCLA added another run in the second, as Monique Mejia led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground-out by Natasha Watley, and scored on a base hit by Amanda Freed. BYU scored its two runs in the top of the third inning on a home run by Cadiente before Goerl posted three of her eight strikeouts to end the inning.
In the fourth, Nuveman connected on her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center to give the Bruins a 6-2 lead. UCLA would then load the bases in the fifth inning, with Mejia scoring on a fielders choice, and Claire Sua connecting on a three-RBI double to get UCLA to 10 runs and end the game with a run-rule win. Goerl improved to 7-0 on the season with the win.
The nightcap saw the Bruins take on No. 12 Nebraska in a game that started just after 6 pm under the lights at the Desert Breeze Softball Complex. Freed opened with three hitless innings in the circle, while the Bruin offense started the show in the top of the second inning. A lead-off walk by Toria Auelua was followed by a bunt single from Stephanie Ramos, and the pair was sacrificed over by left fielder Erin Rahn, before a double by Freed scored both runners to give UCLA the 2-0 lead.
The top of the fourth inning saw most of UCLA's offensive explosion, as the Bruins scored six runs, punctuated by a towering two-run home run by Claire Sua. After a two-run home run by the Cornhuskers in the bottom of the fourth inning, UCLA came back in the fifth to score three more runs, with a two-run home run by Watley, with a back-to-back shot by Freed to complete the scoring.
Freed earned the win, her sixth of the season, striking out six during her five innings in the circle.
UCLA completes its UNLV Classic schedule on Sunday, with a noon first pitch against No. 4 LSU.
