Final Stats - Game 2

LOS ANGELES - The Bruin softball team posted 4-2 and 3-0 victories over Purdue on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium. Earlier in the day, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Florida split their doubleheader, with the Islanders winning game one 8-2 and the Gators winning the nightcap 2-1. The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament concludes on Sunday with a 9 am doubleheader between Purdue and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, followed by a 1:30 pm doubleheader between the Bruins and Gators.

In Saturday's first game, the Bruins posted their first run in the bottom of the first, as Natasha Watley singled, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. Purdue tied it up in the fourth inning, on a solo home run by shortstop Katie Crabtree, her fifth of the season.

In the fifth, UCLA re-took the lead by scoring three runs. A one-out rally produced three runs, as Watley singled to left and scored on a double by Amanda Freed. Freed and Claire Sua, who singled, would both score on a long single to left field by Tairia Mims.

Purdue countered with a run in the seventh, but it was not enough, as the Bruins took the 4-2 win. Keira Goerl earned the victory, improving to 11-1 on the season. Goerl struck out 10 batters and did not issue a walk.

Freed took to the circle in game two, allowing two hits in the first inning before pitching five perfect and six no-hit innings to complete the 3-0 victory. UCLA scored its runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Freed struck out nine and walked on in the contest.

UCLA concludes its weekend schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 1:30 pm doubleheader against Florida. Stacy Winsberg, for whom this tournament was named, played for UCLA from 1982-85, and was a member of three UCLA championship teams. She scored the winning run in extra innings to give UCLA its first NCAA Championship in 1982. She passed away in December, 2001, from a cerebral blood clot following a battle with lung cancer. She was 38 years old.

Winsber's two nephews, Evan (11) and Max (9), threw out the first pitches of the UCLA-Purdue doubleheader on Saturday.
