Zalameda's Run Ends in NCAA Semifinals

May 27, 2005

Athens, Ga. - UCLA freshman tennis player Riza Zalameda's impressive run in the NCAA Singles Championships came to an end Friday, falling in the semifinals to Northwestern's Audra Cohen.

Zalameda, who was aiming to become the first UCLA player to win an NCAA Singles title since Keri Phebus in 1996, lost to Cohen, 6-4, 6-4.

"I was really not affected by her power after playing (Clemson's Julie) Coin and (Alabama's Robin) Stephenson earlier in the tournament," said Zalameda after the match. "They hit the ball hard too. I didn't have fresh legs today, and if I had been fresher maybe things would have been a little different. I also missed too many shots."

Added head coach Stella Sampras Webster, "(Riza) really made a statement this year. She had her usual ups and downs during the season, but she played really well during this tournament."

Cohen will face Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova in Saturday's final.
