The No. 2 Bruin women's water polo team opens the 2003 season with a 7-3 victory over No. 10 Hawaii at the Stanford Invitational.
At the third annual Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, CA, the Bruins jumped out to an early lead scoring three goals in the opening period, while keeping Hawaii scoreless. The Bruins would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game, holding Hawaii to three goals over the final three periods.
Junior Natalie Golda led the Bruins with three goals. Senior Robin Beauregard scored two goals and freshman Kristina Kunkel in her first collegiate game rounded out the Bruins scoring with a pair of goals. Senior goalkeeper Jaime Hipp finished with four saves. For Hawaii, Shannon Carroll, Karin Van Hoff and Miria Whitford each scored a goal. Goalie Amber Lumb finished with six saves.
At 6:00 PM UCLA will face off against crosstown rival and third seed (No. 3 in the nation) USC in a game that will likely determine which team advances to the championship match. On Sunday, February 9, the Bruins will play seventh seeded UC Santa Cruz at 10:00 AM. The Bruins' final game of the tournament will be determined by the results of their final two games.
