University Park, Pa. - After falling in its season-opener two days ago, the top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2006 season Sunday afternoon, posting a 3-0 victory over Maryland at the Penn State Invitational. The Bruins, who fell to No. 3 Penn State, 3-1 on Friday evening, move to 1-1 on the year. Maryland, which defeated No. 10 Tennessee in its opener on Friday, falls to 1-1.

Freshman defender Lauren Wilmoth got things started for UCLA in the 34th minute, recording her first collegiate goal off a free kick.

The Bruins enjoyed a 1-0 advantage for nearly the next 40 minutes until junior midfielder Stephanie Kron added an insurance goal at the 72:08 mark. Bristyn Davis was credited with the assist. Sophomore McCall Zerboni capped the scoring for the Bruins in the 82nd minute off a ball from Caitlyn Mac Kechnie.

Goalkeeper Ashley Thompson picked up her first career victory in goal Sunday, making one save in 90 minutes of action.

UCLA, which lost to Maryland at the Virginia/Nike Classic back in 2004, leads the all-time series 2-1. The Bruins return home next week, hosting San Diego State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Long Beach State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
