Bruins Tied for First at NCAA Indoor Championships

March 12, 2004

Fayetteville, AR - At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center, the Bruins are tied with Florida for first place with 29 points. Rounding out the top-five of 33 teams are Georgia (third, 26), Nebraska (fourth, 23.50) and LSU and Stanford, tied for fifth place with 16 points each.

In today's action, eight of the UCLA competitors received All-America honors (top-eight finishers). Senior Cari Soong kicked things off in the weight throw. Soong threw a personal best and school record 69-4.75 (21.15m), finishing eighth. Former Bruin great Seilala Sua set the previous record of 69-0 (21.03m) at the 2000 NCAA Indoors. Florida's Candice Scott won the weight throw title with a collegiate and meet record mark of 75-7.50 (23.05m). Soong received the seventh All-America honor of her career. Soong has received indoor All-America recognition every year of her collegiate career.

Senior Sheena Johnson and sophomore Dawn Harper competed in the 60m hurdles prelims and final. Johnson placed second in heat two in a personal best 8.11. Harper was third in a personal best 8.17. Both Johnson and Harper advanced to the finals as time qualifiers. In the final, the Bruins placed third and fourth. Johnson finished in 8.11 and Harper set a new personal best of 8.13. It was the 10th All-America honor for Johnson and Harper's first.

Sophomore Chelsea Johnson was the highest Bruin finisher of the day. She was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 13-11.25 (4.25m). Georgia senior Fanni Juhasz won the title, also clearing 13-11.25 (4.25m). The champion was determined by the overall misses during the competition. Johnson had one, while Fuhasz had clearances at every height attempted. In the long jump, true freshman Renee Williams finished sixth overall, jumping 20-1.50 (6.13m). Both Johnson and Williams received their first All-America honor.

The distance medley relay of Melissa McBain, Sheena Johnson, Ashley Caldwell and Lena Nilsson closed out the night. The Bruins finished third in 11:08.70. Tennessee won the title, finishing in 11:06.70. Stanford was second in 11:07.15. All of the members of the distance medley relay received All-America recognition. It is the first for McBain and Caldwell, 11th for Johnson and fifth for Nilsson.
