No. 5 Bruins Cruise Over Cal, 7-0

April 2, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team posted its fourth shutout in a row Friday, cruising to a 7-0 decision over Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins improve to 13-5 with the victory, while Cal drops to 6-11. Friday's result does not count toward the Pac-10 standings.

UCLA dominated the match from the start, quickly taking decisions on all three courts to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. The Bruins top doubles team of Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta, ranked No. 20 in the country, pulled off a slight upset over Cal's Patrick Briaud/Balazs Veress, winning 8-6. Briaud and Veress are currently ranked No. 12 nationally.

Friday's match marked the much-anticipated debut of junior Luben Pampoulov. The left-hander from Dornbirn, Austria was the first to finish his singles match, defeating Veress, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Prior to that, he teamed with freshman Philipp Gruendler at No. 2 doubles, registering an 8-4 victory.

As usual, senior Tobias Clemens was impressive in his match at court No. 1, defeating 84th-ranked Wayne Wong, 6-3, 6-2. Clemens, who improves to 31-4 on the year, is currently ranked fifth in the nation.

Following wins by Pampoulov and Clemens, the Bruins went on to post straight-set decisions on the remaining four courts, as Chris Lam, Kwinta, Francis and Gruendler were all victorious.

UCLA entered Friday's match with consecutive victories over No. 25 Arizona, No. 22 Arizona State and San Diego State, all 7-0 decisions.

UCLA returns to action tomorrow, hosting No. 9 Stanford at the LATC beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow's match will be the last regular-season home contest for Clemens, UCLA's only senior. Saturday will also mark the last time legendary coach Dick Gould will bring his Cardinal to the LATC. Gould, winner of 17 NCAA titles, is retiring at the end of the season.
