LOS ANGELES - T.J. Cummings started his night with a rim-bending dunk and finished with a dominant effort inside after center Dan Gadzuric got in foul trouble.

Cummings had 22 points and a career-high 11 rebounds as the 14th-ranked Bruins defeated Washington 74-62 for their eighth consecutive victory in a rare Friday night game.

Cummings bent the rim during warmups, causing tipoff to be delayed 20 minutes while a new rim was installed.

"Everybody was like, 'Hey, you set the tone.' It kind of got me pumped," he said. "I hadn't done that since high school."

UCLA (10-2, 3-0 Pac-10) never led by more than five points until the final 4:40, getting a scare from the Huskies, who haven't won at Pauley Pavilion since 1987 - a 16-game losing streak.

"We couldn't put a full game together," said Washington's Curtis Allen, who had 15 points and tied his career high with eight assists. "Their offensive rebounding really hurt us at the end."

Washington (6-7, 0-3) lost its fifth in a row to open its first Pac-10 road trip of the season. Josh Barnard, a junior college transfer from Tacoma, scored a career-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers.

"It's a hollow feeling," Barnard said of his point total. "We played well for 36 minutes. The only time this season we've played like that is in practice. We were trying to do things too quick at the end."

After Barnard hit his third 3-pointer of the half to draw the Huskies to 60-59 with 7:21 remaining, they didn't score again until Barnard's fourth 3-pointer with 50 seconds left.

By then, UCLA had run off 10 consecutive points for a 70-59 lead. Cummings had four in the spurt that was capped by Billy Knight's 3-pointer.

"In a game like this, it's who makes the plays," said Washington coach Bob Bender, who fell to 0-9 at Pauley Pavilion. "UCLA made the plays."

Cummings helped the Bruins dominate the boards 46-29, including a 28-19 defensive edge, after Gadzuric got into foul trouble and was limited to six minutes.

"I haven't had a good game on the boards all season, so I had that in my mind," said Cummings, who initially felt bad about causing the pregame delay.

"If I didn't play well, it would be attributed to that. People probably would've thought that I was sitting around dunking," he said.

UCLA freshman point guard Cedric Bozeman returned to action for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery a month ago. He scored six points in seven minutes.

"Just being out there was a sigh of relief," he said. "I had a pretty good week of practice. I've been going hard and trying to get back in the flow."

While UCLA put together its biggest scoring run of the game over the final 6:17, the Huskies fell apart with a series of misses and turnovers.

In the first half, Bozeman scored during a 9-0 run that included consecutive baskets by Dijon Thompson, one of three freshmen on the court as the Bruins took a five-point lead, their largest of the half.

But the Huskies outscored the Bruins 18-16 over the final 8:34 to trail 34-31 at the break.

Gadzuric went to the bench after picking up two fouls in the opening minute. Washington center David Dixon was held scoreless and fouled out with 3:23 remaining.

The Pac-10 changed from its usual Thursday-Saturday schedule to accommodate Thursday night's Rose Bowl national championship football game.
