Bruins Move Up to Sixth Place Tie after 36 Holes

June 2, 2004

The second-ranked UCLA men's golf team climbed the leaderboard on Wednesday, and at the end of the day found itself only six shots off the pace at the halfway mark of the 107th NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Hot Springs, VA.

The 72-hole stroke play tournament is being played at the 6,679-yard, par 70 Cascades Course on The Homestead Resort.

The Bruins, who began the day 10 strokes off the lead, posted a three-over par score of 283 in the second round. That score turned out to be the fourth-lowest total of the day as all the first round leaders either dropped out of contention or fell back toward the field. Although UCLA's two-round total of 572 is 12-over par, it trails first-place California by just six shots. The Golden Bears began the day at one-under par, but ballooned to 289 (+9) and lead second-place Kentucky by one stroke.

BYU, which started the day at even par, posted a score of 290 (+10) and is two back at 570. Washington and Pepperdine vaulted up the leaderboard in round two with solid second-round scores. The Waves posted the best score of the tournament, a four-under 276, and the Huskies were two-over on the day. Each stands at 11-over 571.

Individually, the Bruins' Travis Johnson continued to inch up the leaderboard. He fired a second-round, two-under par 68 and is one stroke off the lead at 137 (-3). Johnson played each nine in one-under par with two birdies and a bogey on each side.

Senior Roy Moon posted a 74 and is tied for 50th at 145 (+5). Moon had five bogeys (four on the front nine) and a birdie on the par 3 18th.

John Merrick, who rallied to shoot a 71 Tuesday, triple-bogeyed the 12th, double-bogeyed the 13th and could not recover, posting a 76. He is tied for 75th at 147 (+7).

Senior Steve Conway rebounded from yesterday's eight-over par round to post an even par score of 70. After playing the outward nine in two-over 37, he bogeyed the 10th hole to climb to three-over on the day. He then birdied four of his final seven holes sandwiched around a bogey at the 14th. He is tied for 88th at 148 (+8).

Junior John Poucher recovered from Tuesday's 79 to card a one-over 71 with birdies at the 17th and 18th. He is tied for 112th at 150 (+10).

Tied for first place at 136 (-4) are Cal's Jeff Hood, Arizona's Chris Nallen and Kentucky's Matt Wells. Johnson is tied with Ryan Moore of UNLA and A.J. Elgert of Kentucky.
