PLEASANTON, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team (26-2) marched through Friday's competition at the National Invitational Softball Tournament, with a 4-1 win over Long Beach State followed by an 8-0 win in six innings over UNC Greensboro and a 4-0 no-hit win against No. 17 Iowa. Against the Hawkeyes, sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl tossed her fourth no-hitter of the season, the 82nd in UCLA softball history.
Against the Spartans, the Bruins scored four runs in the first, two in the second, and a game-ending pair in the bottom of the sixth inning. A double by Claire Sua and triples by Stacey Nuveman and Tairia Mims were included among the Bruins 14 hits in the game. Pitching duties were split between Goerl and Claire Sua, who each pitched three fraes.
In the nightcap against the 17th-ranked Hawkeyes, the Bruins capitalized on six hits, including a double by Nuveman, while Goerl turned in an impressive performance in the circle, striking out 12 and walking two en route to her fourth no-hitter of the 2002 season. It was also the sixth double-figure strikeout game of the season for Goerl.
UCLA will return to action on Saturday at 10 am against Virginia. The Bruins will play at least one additional game on Saturday, which will be determined based upon results of play in the Championship and Consolation brackets.
