LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Bruin senior two-meter Alfonso Tucay (Burbank/Burroughs) recorded a hat trick as UCLA easily defeated Pacific 15-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo match Saturday at Sunset Canyon Rec Center.
The Bruins (4-0 overall, 2-0 MPSF) jumped on the Tigers early, scoring on their first four possessions to take control of the match. Freshman driver Brett Ormsby (El Cajon/Valhalla) scored twice in the opening period to raise his team-high goal total to 10. UCLA led 5-2 after one quarter, and 8-2 at halftime.
Pacific (1-4, 0-3) was held to two first-half goals as UCLA's aggressive field defense, led by junior two-meter defender Matt Flesher (Diamond Bar/Brea Olinda), stymied the Tiger attack. Freshman drivers Peter Belden (Newport Beach/Newport Harbor) and Josh Hewko (San Clemente) each tallied their first collegiate goals, with Belden scoring twice and dishing out a team-high four assists.
"We looked fast on our counterattack today," UCLA head coach Adam Krikorian said. "If we can play at our top level of intensity tomorrow, we can give Stanford a tough game."
