Aug. 19, 2003

Three of the five golfers representing UCLA at the 103rd U.S. Amateur Championship made the 36-hole cut and will advance to Wednesday's match play draw at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA.

Seniors Steve Conway and Travis Johnson plus former Bruin Parker McLachlin earned spots in the match play draw by surviving the 36-hole cut. Conway and McLachlin tied for 13th place at three-over par 143 and Johnson tied for 33rd place at six-over par 143. McLachlin posted a three-under par 67 at the Pittsburgh Field Club Tuesday to earn his spot. Conway carded a four-over par 74 at the same course and Johnson posted an eight-over par 78 at Oakmont.

Senior John Merrick, who did not make a birdie in 36 holes of medal play, and junior John Poucher did not survine the cut.

Fourteen players will tee it up at 7:15 a.m. EDT Wednesday to determine the final 12 spots for the match play draw. Match play competition for the top 64 players begins at 9 a.m. EDT.
