UCLA sophomore gymnast Kate Richardson (Coquitlam, BC) has been selected to compete at the 2004 Canadian Olympic Trials after a fifth-place showing at the Canadian National Championships.

In her first elite meet in two years, Richardson scored a 35.6 in the all-around and recorded the highest floor exercise score in the first day of competition, a 9.4, to qualify for event finals. She withdrew from the floor finals, however, to rest a bruised heel. Richardson also qualified for event finals on the uneven bars and placed sixth.

The Olympic Trials will take place July 10-11 at Sport Seneca in Toronto, site of the 2000 Olympic Trials, which Richardson won. Richardson had the highest finish ever by a Canadian at the Olympics, placing 15th in the all-around. The scores from the National Championships will count for 35 percent towards the final six selections for the Olympic team.

Competing at the Canadian Olympic Trials are:

Kylie Stone, Stampede City Gymnastics Club
Melanie Banville, Ottawa Gymnastics Centre
Heather Purnell, Ottawa Gymnastics Centre
Amelie Plante, Gymnix
Laura-Ann Chong, Abbotsford Twisters
Kate Richardson, Abbotsford Twisters/UCLA
Marci Bernholtz, ASF
Danielle Hicks, ASF
Jennifer Simbhudas, Winstonettes
Gael Mackie, Omega

Richardson is the third UCLA gymnast to qualify for Olympic Trials this year. Former Bruin Mohini Bhardwaj qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials with a 12th-place finish at the USA Championships, as did alum Steve McCain, with his seventh-place showing. The U.S. Olympic Trials will take place June 24-27 at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim.
