Ojai, Calif. - UCLA men's tennis sophomore Jeremy Drean kept the Bruins' hope for a conference singles title alive Friday, winning his quarterfinal match in the Invitational draw at the Pac-10 Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
Drean, who defeated Arizona's Peter Zimmer, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round late Thursday, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Stanford's Jon Wong. He will next face Stanford's Phil Kao on Saturday morning. UCLA's Jason Nguyen and Jaysen Chung were also in the Invitational draw, however each dropped second-round matches Thursday.
In doubles, the top-seeded duo of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel began play Friday, posting an 8-3 victory over USC's Adam Loucks/Garrett Snyder in the first round. They will meet Stanford's Matt Bruch/Blake Muller late Friday afternoon. Mathieu Dehaine and Drean also moved on to the second round, defeating Oregon's Thomas Bieri/Eric Pickard, 9-8(3). They will next face Cal's John Petit/Daniel Sebescen.
The duo of Chung and Nguyen received a first-round bye in the Pac-10 Invitational doubles draw and will meet Stanford's Phil Kao/Chris Rasmussen in the second round.
