UCLA junior Roy Moon won his first round match at the 92nd California State Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Wednesday.

Moon, trying to become just the 11th player in 91 years to win medalist honors and the championship trophy that accompanies the winner of the match play competition, defeated 24-year old Joe Moulton of Citrus Heights, 4 & 3.

Moon was 1-up before he birdied the scenic, yet treacherous par-three, 106-yard seventh hole. He made pars on Nos. 8, 9 and 10 and was 4-up before Moulton cut the lead with a birdie at the par three 12th. The two players halved Nos. 13 and 14 before Moon sealed the victory with a birdie at the par 4, 396-yard 15th.

The Simi Valley native meets 48-year old Buzz Peel of Del Ray Beach, FL, in Thursday's second round.

In other action, former UCLA player Spencer Levin won his first round match, 3 & 2, against 2001 Cal State Amateur champion Darryl Donovan of Gilroy. Levin meets 22-year old Mark Warman of San Clemente in his second round match.
