FRESNO, CA - Top-ranked and undefeated UCLA improved its record to 22-0 on Thursday night in Fresno, CA, with a 5-1 win over No. 25 Long Beach State. The Bruins capitalized on two home runs by Claire Sua and one by Stephanie Ramos for the win, while Keira Goerl struck out six for her 13th victory of the season.
After Caitlin Benyi led off the top of the first inning with a single through the left side of the infield, Claire Sua got the Bruins on the board with her third home run of the season, a shot to left field that cleared the bleachers beyond the left field fence.
A similar pattern emerged in the top of the third inning as Benyi reached on a one-out walk and came around to score on the seventh home run of the season by Stephanie Ramos that landed just over the right field fence.
Sua led off the top of the sixth inning with a home run to virtually the same spot in left field, her second home run of the game and fourth of the season, giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
The Beach got its first hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, a double to straightaway center field by Jamie Farnworth. Farnworth would come around to score on a single by Marcel Torres before Roxanne Staniorski grounded out to end the inning with UCLA leading 5-1.
For UCLA, senior All-American Keira Goerl struck out six as she won her 13th game of the season.
The Bruins return to action on Friday morning with an 11 am first pitch against North Texas at the Clovis Auto Row Classic. UCLA will finish tournament play with two games each on Saturday and Sunday at Bulldog Diamond in Fresno, CA.
