WICHITA, KS - The Bruins (25-21) dropped a 10-3 contest to 12th-ranked Wichita State (33-9) in front of 4,601 fans at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kansas.
UCLA scored a run in each of the first two innings to build an early 2-0 lead. In the first frame, Chris Denove drove in Mike Svetlic with a single through the left side. Svetlic had also singled earlier in the frame.
In the second inning, a lead-off double from Brandon Averill would turn into a Bruin run when he scored on a double play. After two, UCLA led 2-0.
The Shockers would not get onto the board until the fifth frame when they posted three runs in the frame. After two singles drove in two runs, Drew Moffitt put Wichita State ahead with a RBI-single up the middle.
Four more Shocker runs would cross home plate in the sixth frame. Brandon Green highlighted the inning with a two-run double to right field.
UCLA would add a run to its tally in the top of the seventh inning. Averill would score for the second time of the night when Jarrad Page hit a single to right field.
Wichita State hit two home runs in the bottom of the seventh to increase its lead to seven runs. A two-run homer from Joe Muich and a solo home run from Shawn Smarsh would give the Shockers a 10-3 advantage.
Averill highlighted the Bruin offense, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice. Preston Griffin also put together a multiple hit night, with two singles. Denove and Page recorded the Bruin RBIs on the night.
UCLA will return home this weekend to host Arizona in a non-conference series. Friday night's game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
