Track and Field Squads Down Baylor, CS Northridge

Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women and Bob Larsen's Bruin men track and field teams defeated Baylor and CS Northridge Saturday at Drake Stadium in triangular and dual meet scoring. It was UCLA's final home track meet of the 1999 collegiate outdoor season.

In women's triangular scoring, UCLA, ranked No. 3 in the nation in this week's Trackwire, won with 173 points, followed by Baylor, tied for No. 7, with 105 and CS Northridge, with 70 points. In dual scoring, UCLA beat Baylor (112- 66) and CS Northridge (129-51) and Baylor also beat CS Northridge (92-67).

For the Bruin women, it was their 60th consecutive dual win, including 49 straight victories at Drake Stadium. Bolden, in her sixth season at the Bruin helm, is an unbeaten 52-0 in dual competition.

In men's triangular scoring, the Bruins, ranked No. 25 in the U. S., won with 150.5 points, followed by CS Northridge, with 99 and Baylor, tied for No. 17, with 97.5 points. In dual scoring, the Bruins beat Baylor (100-69) and CS Northridge (116-65) and CS Northridge beat Baylor (88-72).

UCLA's men returned to their winning ways in dual meets. Last Saturday at Drake Stadium, the Florida men beat UCLA 101-99. That loss snapped the Bruins' overall 58 straight-dual meet winning streak and their 51-consecutive dual meet winning streak at Drake Stadium. Larsen, in his 15th season as the UCLA men's head coach, now has a school and career dual meet mark of 117-3-1.

In women's competition, UCLA junior Seilala Sua won three events--hammer (167-5), shot put (53-6 1/2) and discus (196-11); Baylor sprinter Ssereta Lafayette won the 100m (11.60) and 200m (23.79); Bruin Joanna Hayes won both hurdle races (100m hurdles, 13.26, season-best; 400m hurdles, 58.00); Baylor's Yulanda Nelson won the 400m (52.14) and the anchor leg on the Bears' winning 4 X 400m relay (3:34.87) and UCLA's Keyon Soley won the long jump (19-10 1/4) and ran the third leg on UCLA's winning 4 X 100m relay (44.13, season-best).

In men's competition, Baylor's Tre Gardner won three events (long jump, 23-2 3/4; 100m, 10.47 and 200m, 21.16w); Bruin thrower Luke Sullivan won the hammer (201-0) and discus (190-04); Baylor's Brandon Couts won the 400m (45.46) and ran the second leg on Baylor's winning 4 X 400m relay (3:05.34) and Baylor's Michael Smith won the 110m hurdles (14.33) and the third leg on the Bears' winning 4 X 400m relay.

Next weekend, the Bruins will be competing at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Long Beach Classic.
