Don Sawyer, who for 28 years was the public address announcer for UCLA men's basketball, including 27 seasons in Pauley Pavilion, died Saturday (March 23) at the UCLA Medical Center following a three-year battle with cancer.
Sawyer, who was a 36-year UCLA employee (1955-91, in his final nine years he was the Fiscal Officer for the College of Fine Arts), began as the Bruin men's basketball public address announcer in 1964-65 at the Sports Arena. The following season (1965-66), the Bruins moved into Pauley Pavilion and Sawyer served as the PA announcer for the next 27 years. He never missed a game (449, including 435 in Pauley) during his 28 seasons and his last game (before retiring) was March 14, 1992.
A 1956 UCLA graduate, Sawyer from 1988-91 was also the PA announcer for UCLA football at the Rose Bowl.
Sawyer was a working basketball official for 38 years (1960-98). He was President, Instructional Chairman and Instructor of the Southern California Basketball Officials Association.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Bonnie, who worked in the UCLA Athletic Department from 1976-1992, four children, Don Sawyer, Jr., Mark Sawyer, Kelly Mayhew and Scott Mayhew and six grandchildren.
Sawyer was born March 31, 1929 in Los Angeles. He was 72 years old.
