SAN MARCOS, Texas -
UCLA handed Southwest Texas bitter defeats, and avoided upsets in both games of a doubleheader: 4-3 and 3-1.
The Bobcats forced extra innings in game one when senior Stephanie Hughes singled with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Ashley Koop from third. With the scored tied at two, the schools exchanged runs in the ninth before the Bruins pushed across the winner in the tenth. Southwest Texas had a runner on third with no outs, but a missed sacrifice ended up with the runner picked off of third base, nullifying the SWT threat.
Southwest Texas Junior Jessica Chase pitched a complete game and limited the top-ranked team in the country to two earned runs in ten innings. The ten inning affair was the longest game played by either team this season.
In game two, Bobcats Senior Sarah Kmiec hit her second home run of the season in the first to put the Bobcats up, 1-0. However, that would be all the offense Southwest Texas would muster against UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl.
UCLA, now 21-0, homered twice against SWT starter Nicole Neuerburg, solo shots by Amanda Freed and Lupe Brambila.
