Minneapolis, MN - In today's American Cup qualifying event, hosted by the University of Minnesota, junior Janine Strack was one of 11 divers to qualify for the 10-meter platform at the Speedo American Cup this Friday.
Strack qualified for the American Cup meet with an 8th place finish in the women's 10-meter platform, scoring 204.06. Of the 15 competitors, only the top-11 qualified for the American Cup.
Yesterday, sophomore Paige Thompson qualified on three-meter springboard. She will compete on Saturday at the American Cup. And, former Bruin All-American Regan Gosnell was invited to compete on 10-meter platform at the Speedo American Cup.
At the Speedo American Cup, the 24 best athletes in each of the Olympic Diving disciplines compete for spots in this summer's Olympic Trial meet. The top two American individuals from the American will earn two points toward the qualifying mark, thereby automatically qualifying for the Trial meet. The following six Americans will earn one point toward the qualification process. The top 24 athletes in each event will be invited to the Olympic Trial meet, held June 7-13, in St. Peter's, MO. On the current point list, Gosnell is listed in the 17th position.
"I am very pleased to have three athletes competing in the American Cup," said Head Coach Tom Stebbins. "Friday and Saturday should be very exciting for UCLA Diving."
The Speedo American Cup will continue Thursday through Saturday. On Thursday, prelims and finals in synchronized diving will take place. Friday, the platform event will be contested. And, the three-meter springboard event will wrap up the action on Saturday.
