Five golfers with UCLA ties are among the 166 competitors at the 84th California State Open being hosted by the Murietta Country Club in Murietta.
Former Bruin Parker McLachlin is one stroke off the lead after three rounds. He posted a one-under par 71 Friday and was tied for second place at nine-under par 207. Only a double bogey on the 54th hole kept him out of the lead.
Two-time All-American John Merrick was tied for sixth after firing a three-under par 69. Merrick birdied the last two holes and was tied with a group at six-under 210.
UCLA Head Coach O.D. Vincent played the inward nine in two-under par and carded a third round 73. He was tied for 14th at three-under 213.
Former All-American Travis Johnson was tied for 53rd at 220 (+4) and former UCLA letterman Eddy Lee was tied for 64th at 223 (+7).
Final round action continues Saturday.
