Cyndi Gallagher's No. 7 UCLA Bruin swim and dive team will head to Arizona this weekend to battle Arizona State and Arizona in Pac-10 dual meet action. The Bruins will head to Tempe on Friday, Nov. 18 to face the No. 25 Sundevils at 2:00 pm, and will then head to Tucson to face the No. 6 Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 12:00 pm.
"We match up well with ASU, and Arizona is one of the strongest teams in the nation," said Gallagher. "If our performances at SMU, UCSB and UCSD are any indication of the strength and talent of the women on this team, then we should be able to post some superior times this weekend. Against Arizona, it will likely come down to the 3rd, 4th and 5th places. The UCLA women have had a successful fall in training and I expect that we will be a strong contender in the Pac 10."
The Bruins are currently 4-0 (1-0 Pac-10) after defeating Oregon State, UC Santa Barbara, the University of San Diego and UC San Diego and will look to improve to 6-0 this weekend. Last year, UCLA defeated Arizona State 174-123 and but lost to Arizona by one point (149-148). All-time, UCLA holds a 14-8-1 advantage over ASU and a 14-9 record over the Wildcats.
The swim and dive team has already had much success as the team is poised for a breakout year. In October, the Bruins placed just behind reigning National Champion Florida as junior Katie Arnold was named the "High Point Award Winner" at the SMU Invitational. Last weekend, the divers showcased a young and talented team as freshmen Marisa Samaniego and Tess Schofield finished in the top-five in their events at the Trojan Diving Invitational.
Following this weekend's competitions, the swimmers will not compete until January of 2006, while the divers will head to the Georgia Invitational December 2-4.
