UCLA Baseball Names Matt Jones Full-Time Assistant Coach

Aug. 16, 2006

Los Angeles - UCLA baseball head coach John Savage has announced that assistant coach Matt Jones has been promoted to a full-time position after having served the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach. The announcement comes two days after Cal State L.A. hired former UCLA assistant coach Pat Shine as the Golden Eagles' interim head baseball coach.

"Matt has shown tremendous loyalty and dedication to our program," Savage said. "He is an outstanding coach who knows the Pac-10 Conference. We are fortunate to have such a high-quality coach and person in our program."

The 2007 campaign will mark Jones' third season coaching baseball at UCLA. Last year, Jones helped guide the Bruins to a 33-25 overall record, an appearance in the Malibu Regional and a third-place Pac-10 finish.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to continue coaching," Jones said. "I really enjoy being a part of the program and tradition at UCLA, and I look forward to the 2007 season."

Jones came to UCLA after having assisted Coach Savage at UC Irvine in 2004. That season, he helped guide the Anteaters to a 34-23-1 record and the program's first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. Jones began his coaching career at the University of California, where he served as an undergraduate assistant from 1998 to 1999.

Jones also coached three collegiate summer teams - the St. Cloud Riverbats (1999), the Brewster Whitecaps (2000) and the Alexandria Beetles (2002-03). He served as an associate head coach at Los Medanos College in Pittsburgh, Calif., from 2000-2002. Jones assumed head coaching duties prior to the 2003 season and guided the team to its first winning season and first state playoff berth in six years. His teams at Los Medanos included three major league draftees and four All-America selections.
