LOS ANGELES - Coming off a tough loss to No. 7 Baylor less than a week ago, the ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rebounded in a big way Wednesday, pulling off perhaps its biggest victory of the year in the form of a 6-1 upset of No. 3 Duke at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins improve their record to 11-4 overall with the victory, handing Duke (10-3) just its third loss of the season.
UCLA got off to a strong start, taking victories on the top two doubles courts to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. Following an 8-5 UCLA victory at court No. 1, Duke evened it up with an 8-6 decision at court No. 3. UCLA's Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol clinched the point for the Bruins at court No. 2, downing Stephen Amritraj and Peter Rodrigues, 8-5.
Singles play began with the Bruins taking a pair of straight-set victories at court Nos. 4 and 5. Philipp Gruendler was first off, dispatching of Duke's Joey Atas, 6-2, 6-3 at court No. 4. Surapol followed that up with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Kiril Dimitrov at court No. 5, giving UCLA a 3-0 lead.
UCLA's Benjamin Kohlloeffel, ranked second in the country, clinched the match for UCLA at the No. 1 spot, downing fourth-ranked Ludovic Walter, 6-3, 7-6(3). Kohlloeffel is a remarkable 17-1 against ranked opponents this season.
With UCLA up 4-0, UCLA's Michael Look (court No. 6) and Abid (court No. 2) both pulled out victories. Duke's lone point on the day came at court No. 3, where Rodrigues edged Bruin sophomore Mathieu Dehaine, 3-6, 7-6(4), (10-8).
UCLA has the next two weeks off for final exams and spring break. The Bruins' next match will be a meeting with Arizona State on Mar. 31 in Tempe.
