Lexus Gauntlet Points on the Line This Friday . . .
The 17th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (9-2; 2-0 Pac-10) is gearing up for what will likely be one of its toughest matches of the season, as the Bruins travel across town to take on No. 4 USC (9-1; 2-0 Pac-10) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Friday's match will not count in the Pac-10 standings. The conference match between these two teams will not be until an April 22 showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Women of Troy, who won both meetings last season by 4-3 scores, lead the all-time series 40-34. Live stats for Friday's match will be available at www.usctrojans.com.
Bruins Begin Conference Play With Sweep of Washington Schools . . .
UCLA started the conference part of its season on a positive note over the weekend, downing both Washington State and Washington at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Bruin No. 1 Riza Zalameda did not play in either match, however it didn't seem to matter as UCLA had each match wrapped up prior to doubles play. Both matches were played with singles first followed by doubles due to poor weather conditions.
UCLA in the Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 17 in the latest rankings released by the ITA on Tuesday. Individual rankings were released last week and leading the way in singles is No. 24 Laura Gordon. She is followed by No. 37 Tracy Lin, No. 73 Ashley Joelson and No. 113 Anna-Viktoria Lind. Gordon and Riza Zalameda check in at No. 40 in doubles. They are followed by No. 51 Elizabeth Lumpkin/Alex McGoodwin. Team and individual rankings will be released again on Mar. 21.
Bruins Add Hawaii-Pacific to Schedule . . .
UCLA added another non-conference opponent to its schedule last week, announcing that it will travel to Honolulu for a meeting with Hawaii-Pacific on March 25 at 10:00 a.m. The Bruins were scheduled to have a two-week hiatus for final exams and spring break.
Tracy Lin Racking Up Dual-Match Wins . . .
Sophomore Tracy Lin owns the best record on the team in dual-match play, taking a 10-1 mark into this week's showdown with USC. Lin, who has split her time between the Nos. 2 and 3 positions, also leads the team in overall wins with 23. She is 5-4 against ranked competition.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 159-85 (.652). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
