Top-Ranked UCLA Takes First Games of Gaucho Invitational

Feb. 25, 2005

On the opening day of the Gaucho Invitational, a 24 team gathering of the best women's water polo schools in the country, No. 1 UCLA defeated No. 19 Princeton, 16-1 and No. 18 Arizona State, 20-8. Coming off of a relatively close Hawaii victory, the Bruins were motivated to play harder and to prove their No. 1 ranking. In the first game, UCLA dominated Princeton throughout , building a 10-0 lead until the Tigers scored in the third quarter for their only goal of the game. Against Arizona State, the Bruins also had little trouble, making the score 14-4 at the half and eventually defeating the Sun Devils.

Against Princeton, the Bruin scoring was very spread out, with 12 different girls making goals. Brittany Rowe, Kacy Kunkel, Jillian Kraus, and Katherine Belden each tallied two. Gabrielle Domanic, Natalie Golda, Courtney Mathewson, Katie Flanagan, Thalia Munro, Monique Blanchard, Kristina Kunkel, and Brittney Bowlus scored once. Goalkeeper Emily Feher had 10 saves.

The Arizona State game was very similar to the first game in scoring, with 12 different Bruins having goals. Domanic, Golda, Belden, Munro, Bowlus, Kelly Rulon, Brittany Rowe, and Monique Blanchard each had two. Molly Cahill, Kacy Kunkel, Kamaile Crowell, and Lauren Heineck scored once.

According to the tournament schedule, the winner of Group A, UCLA, will face the winner of group H, Hawaii. The second match will be determined by the winner of that game.
