UCLA men's tennis coach Bill Martin and Washington women's tennis coach Patty Fendick McCain will be honored at the 100th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament April 27-30. The names of both coaches have been listed on a newly-constructed "Wall of Fame" at the entrance to Court One in Ojai's Libbey Park, site of the Pac-10 individual championships.
Eighty former Ojai players who have gone on to win at least one Grand Slam event have been included on the plaques, which line a stone wall. Among the names included are May Sutton Bundy (the first American to win Wimbledon), Bill Tilden, Billie Jean King, Stan Smith (USC), Arthur Ashe (UCLA), Jimmy Connors (UCLA), Tracy Austin, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras and Lindsay Davenport.
Martin and McCain will be honored at a banquet on April 29 at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa with other returning "Wall of Fame" stars. Others coming back for the 100th celebration are: Gene Mako, Dodo Bundy Cheney, Ted Schroeder (Stanford), Jack Kramer, Louise Brough Clapp, Bob Falkenburg (USC), Beverly Baker Fleitz, Alex Olmedo (USC), Dennis Ralston (USC), Peggy Michel (ASU), Pam Teeguarden, Hank Pfister, Scott Davis (Stanford) and Eric Amend.
The Ojai, the oldest continously running tournament played in the same location, dates back to 1896. In addition to the "Wall of Fame" banquet, there will be a reception for coaches, along with specially minted gold and silver medals commemorating the 100th Ojai for winners and runnersup of all 37 divisions. Approximately 1600 hundred players are expected to compete in this 100th tournament.
