Ft. Wayne, IN - The ninth-ranked (NSCAA) UCLA men's soccer team kicked off the 2005 season with a 1-1 decision in an exhibition contest against No. 1 Indiana at the IPFW Soccer Showcase. Senior midfielder Ryan Valdez scored the tying goal at 70:57 to tie the game, and junior goalkeeper Eric Reed had six second-half saves to keep the Hoosiers scoreless in the final 45 minutes.
Indiana struck first in the contest, scoring at 27:08 on a goal by Kevin Noschang, who took a flick pass from Jacob Peterson and sent in a shot into the left side netting to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins equalized in the 71st minute when defender Marvell Wynne's throw-in found the head of Valdez, who put the ball in past IU keeper Chay Kain.
Reed's strong play in goal kept Indiana off the boards in the second half. The Hoosiers outshot UCLA 8-3 in the second half, but six of those eight shots were saved by Reed, including three in the final six minutes.
UCLA officially opens the season on Friday, Sept. 2 against Santa Clara at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium. Game time is at 5 pm. The Bruins also open at home that week against Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 pm.
