Berkeley, Calif. - UCLA women's soccer player Jill Oakes was one of just 11 players chosen to Soccer America's Freshman All-America Team announced Thursday.
Oakes, a midfielder from West Hills, Calif., enjoyed an excellent freshman campaign, helping UCLA to an 18-4 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals. She was one of only two freshmen in the Pac-10 to earn first-team all-conference honors in 2002. Oakes played in 19 matches, missing the Bruins' season opener while helping the Under-19 U.S. National Team to the World Cup title in August. Ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the nation by Soccer America last year, Oakes finished the season with 10 points (3g, 4a).
North Carolina's Lindsay Tarpley was named Soccer America's Freshman of the Year.
