Bruins Begin the 2004-05 Season Ranked No.1

Sept. 1, 2004

UCLA's defending NCAA champion women's golf team begins the 2004-05 season ranked No.1 by both GolfWeek and GolfWorld magazines. The top billing marks the first time the Bruins have started a season as the consensus No. 1 team. "We are very excited about the upcoming season," said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Forsyth, who earned NGCA Coach of the Year honors in May. "Many things can happen during a season, so we are looking to stay healthy, motivated, and focused on our long-term goals. I am excited for our players, and looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season as individuals and as a team." The Bruins boast three pre-season First-Team All-Americans. Senior Charlotte Mayorkas, junior Susie Mathews and sophomore Hannah Jun each earned the honor from GolfWeek. Mayorkas returns as the country's No.2 ranked female collegian after earning First-Team NGCA All-America honors the last two years. She led the Bruins with a 71.6 stroke average last season, four tournament victories and 35 consecutive counters. She also won the 2004 Pac-10 title and finished fourth individually at the NCAA's. Mathews earned First-Team NGCA All-America honors and Academic All-America acclaim last season. She finished third individually at the NCAAs and ranked sixth nationally. She recorded four Top 10 finishes and a 73.3 stroke average. Jun earned 2nd Team All-America honors as a freshman last season and won the 2004 NCAA West Regional title. Voted 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, she finished as the runner-up to Mayorkas in the conference championship. Senior Melissa Martin red-shirted last season after tying for 16th place at the 2003 Pac-10 Championships. A veteran of 87 tournaments, Martin has a career stroke average of 76.7 with three Top 10 finishes and eight Top 20 finishes. The Bruins welcome back second-year freshman Brianna Loyear, and true freshmen Amie Cochran and Vanessa Brockett will report on Sept. 7. Cochran enters UCLA as the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur medalist and a 2003 First-Team AJGA All-American. Brockett is a three-time L.A. City Women's Amateur champion from Campbell Hall in Studio City. Loyear is a four-time MVP and all-conference selection from Fresno's Bullard High.
