Women's Water Polo Finishes Third at MPSF Tournament
By: UCLA Athletics

April 12, 1999

Southern Cal Western Regional: The UCLA Bruins (18-8 overall, 6-3 MPSF) will have two weeks off to prepare for the Southern Section Western Regional Qualifying Tournament, which will be held at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool on April 23-25. This is the first year that the Western Regional have been divided into Northern and Southern sections.

On Saturday, April 24, UCLA meets the San Diego State Aztecs (19-13 overall, 3-6 MPSF) for a 9 am game. In their two meetings with the Aztecs this season, UCLA easily handed San Diego State two losses, both by at least a six-point margin. At the MPSF Tournament this weekend, the Aztecs finished sixth, falling to Hawai'i, 9-7, in the fifth place game.

The same day, the Bruins face off with their rival USC (24-2 overall, 8-1 MPSF) at 2 pm. The Bruins have lost all four of their games against the Trojans this season, but have never lost by more than two points. The Bruins last met with the Trojans this past Saturday, when the Trojans defeated the Bruins, 7-5, at the MPSF Tournament.

Sunday's matchups will be determined by the results of the Friday and Saturday games. If UCLA qualifies for the Collegiate Championships, the Bruins will travel to UC Davis on May 7-9 to try and contend for their fourth straight national title.

All-Federation Selections: Freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc) received first-team All-Federation accolades. The 5-11 attacker is currently leading her team with 48 goals. Zivich has scored in all but one of UCLA's 26 games this season. Freshman Jenny Lamb earned second-team All-Federation honors. The 5-7 playmaker from Huntington Beach is the third-leading scorer on the team with 25 points. She is currently posting a 48% shooting percentage, the second highest on the team.

Honorable Mention honors went to goalkeeper Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD), senior Katie Tenenbaum (Merced), senior Mandy McAloon (Millersville, MD) and senior Amanda Gall of Placentia.

Four Bruins Make MPSF All-Tournament Team: Zivich, Lamb, Golaboski and McAloon were again rewarded for their efforts, each earning second team honors on the 1999 MPSF All-Tournament Team.

Bruin Notes: At the MPSF Tournament this weekend, the Bruins went 4-1, outscoring opponents 38-23 and upsetting #2 Stanford in the third-place match.

On Friday, April 9, the Bruins rallied to top the No. 11 Long Beach State 49ers, 5-4. Later that day, UCLA grabbed a 7-1 win against the San Jose Spartans.

On the second day of competition, the Bruins cruised past the Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i, recording a 14-5 victory. In their second match of the day, UCLA fell to the top-ranked USC Trojans in a close 7-5 loss.

On Sunday, the final day of competition, the Bruins upset #2 Stanford, 7-6, in overtime. In an action-packed game that featured four ties and three lead changes, three-time defending national champion UCLA emerged as third place Tournament champions. UCLA's stifling defense was led by Golaboski, who recorded 11 saves.
